Oceani

Oceani is a film we designed and directed for our SIGGRAPH 2023 talk with SideFX. It’s a short meditation on the ocean’s ability to heal, told without a word, and it gave us a stage to push our craft in front of a room of the people who build the tools we use every day.

The Story in Three Moves

It opens on a broken anchor sinking, not an image of harm, but of withdrawal, humanity stepping back. The anchor hits the seabed and a tornado of sand swallows it, a cleansing that erases the mark we left. Out of that swirling sand, a jellyfish forms and drifts up, new life, the ocean beginning to recover. Three images, one idea: given space, the sea returns to itself.

Why We Made It

Oceani was the centerpiece of a technical talk, so it had to be beautiful and hold up to an audience that would notice exactly how it was made. The sand simulation, the fluid, the creature work, all of it was a chance to push our pipeline and show our thinking to our peers. It’s the kind of film a studio makes when it wants to prove something to itself first.
